Our third week volunteering was – thankfully – less eventful than the second. We settled back into the routine of surveys and used our free time to explore more of the island, play volleyball and even build a semi-successful raft (cast away style)!
We spent one of our days off – along with several friends from camp – hiking over to one of the most picturesque beaches I've ever seen. We took food, drinks and music, chilled out and enjoyed the amazing view. We also got to witness more of the islands incredible sunsets. Everything about this island is stunning; the beaches, forests, wildlife… we have been so lucky to stay here.
The week ended with some great luck too! Kerry and I were the only volunteers not to have seen a turtle come out of the sea to make its nest. A group of volunteers out on a survey came across one while Kerry and I were on camp, cooking (we had base duty that day). One of the staff members remembered that we hadn’t seen one nesting, ran into the kitchen, told us to get on the boat and leave the cooking to her. We jumped on the boat where another staff member drove us along the outskirts of the island and dropped us off just in time to see the female covering her eggs. During nesting, turtles go into a trance-like state which basically means that you can get as close to them as possible without scaring them. It was so nice of the staff to remember and go out of there way for us, as a result, we got some amazing pictures and witnessed a unique and incredible sight. Thanks guys!
